The coastal village of Beer in East Devon is a must place to visit if you are staying at Longbridge House, it is a firm favourite with guests of all ages. Just a few minutes drive away it is easily found and has parking right in the village centre.

Beer has a huge range of history, with Smuggling right at the heart of it, in the 18th and 19th centuries most of the population were involved in someway, whether smuggling, or working for the authorities catching the smugglers. The plague of the 17th century and The Spanish Armada  also make up part of the history of this stunning village.

The village now has interesting shops, galleries, antiques and traditional pubs. The jewel in the crown must be the wonderful pebbled beach, with working fishing boats which are dragged up onto the beach, small wooden pleasure boats for hire and a few on the beach cafes which are of particular note.

Beer has its own micro climate, being in the bottom of a steep sided valley and in a small bay, which is protected from prevailing winds by Beer Head.

Where else in the country could you find a tradition that goes back over a hundred years, where people queue up for a bag of Hot cross Buns, probably no where, Sidmouth in East Devon surely must be the only place.

It is a tradition that started over a hundred years ago, when the local bakers went on strike, local businessmen went out to find Hot Cross Buns and brought them back for the local children. A hundred years on, and it is still very similar, the bag now contains, 2 buns, an orange and a small chocolate egg, around 2000 of these bags are distributed every Good Friday.

It is part of Sidmouth life, generation after generation take part, children, parents, grand parents and no doubt great grand parents, all remembering when they queued up to get their bag. It is one of those amazing traditions that  shows everything good about family life, families together.

Sunday 8th March 2008 sees East Devon invaded by hordes of cross country runners who find pleasure in running 20 or so miles, through water, mud, bushes, up hills, down hills, along beaches and up and down the valleys around Seaton, Beer and Branscombe as many times possible ! all in the name of fun, and obviously in the name of charity, The Grizzly a great source of sponsorship donations.

The course starts and finishes in Seaton, East Devon, and the runners are then taken on a course that takes them to the limit of endurance, covering the next 20 miles with as many natural tortures as possible.

Longbridge House sleeps up to 17 people, has seven bedrooms which are all ensuite. It is set in woderful countryside in East Devon, with the Jurassic coast just a few minutes drive away. The cottage is very large, with 4 reception rooms, including a games room.
